Personality:
The first impression most people get from Rei Ayanami is 'cold'. She is very quiet and withdrawn, and when she does need to interact is blunt and matter-of-fact often to the point of rudeness. She rarely takes action without direct orders, and shows little emotion even in stressful or upsetting circumstances--the perfect toy soldier. This isn't an image she does anything to fight, instead allowing others to assume what they will. However, past this shell is a complex and surprisingly warm personality for those that make the effort to reach out.

Rei is a very introspective person, often pondering her own nature and identity. Her status as one clone of many created for a singular purpose is a source of much insecurity, and while she does not see herself as anything but inherently disposable Rei also clings desperately to anything and anyone that affirms her individuality. Unfortunately she is very awkward in expressing such sentiment and only shows this attachment in small ways, such as keeping an old pair of broken glasses or learning how to cook. She is also kind and caring, doing what she can to return any warmth she is shown; this is most notably shown in her attempt to host a dinner for the Evangelion pilots and some members of NERV staff in the hopes of allowing Gendo and Shinji's broken relationship to heal.

All of Rei's expressions and outward actions are in some way muted; she allows herself to become part of the background, only stepping forward when called for. This is so ingrained in her that something as small as saying 'good morning' when walking into her classroom is greeted with shock and confusion by her classmates. In some part this is a deliberate act on her part--as an inherently replaceable being, Rei does not feel there is a point to becoming attached to anything, nor in allowing others to become attached in turn. But this is also due to a personal awkwardness in social situations, an inexperience that leaved her confused as to how to react when she survives a mission she did not expect to live through; it is not until Shinji expresses his concern and suggests that she could smile that she does so.

She is single-minded in purpose, not allowing herself to become distracted from whatever task is at hand. She pursues her goal to the detriment of her own well-being--several times Rei willingly puts herself directly in harm's way just to allow a chance at success, once even against direct orders to stand down for her own sake. The combination of her low self-worth and the desperate need to be worth existing in some way combine into a near suicidal will, and even if a goal is not her own she will see her task done. This is not to say that she follows anyone blindly; as her friendship with Shinji develops, she becomes more and more firm in the assertion that she is 'not a doll' and does turn against those she loses faith in. But her self-perception is a fragile and complex thing, defined in large part by past trauma and isolation.

Rei is also highly objectified, both in universe and on a meta-textual level. As both a clone of Yui Ikari and the container of Lilith's soul, Rei is a powerful feminine entity that is chained down and used by the masculine for his own purposes (Gendo), and persecuted by the feminine that falsely directs her anger and pain from the masculine onto her (Ritsuko). As a result she is similarly viewed as a doll that meekly follows orders by Asuka (Asuka). At first Rei does not attempt to fight this as she believes this of herself, but as her relationships with Shinji, Misato, and the others strengthen she begins to see past that imposed image and fights against it, attempting to claim her 'self' for her own.

Despite her awkwardness in interacting with others, Rei is very perceptive of the thoughts and feelings of others. She is highly aware of the ways that people present themselves, both deliberately and not so, and occasionally offers insight into such (though it is most often in the odd philosophical way that much of Evangelion is presented). She holds a distaste for violent or forceful personalities, people that are aggressive and dismiss the thoughts and feelings of others, something that is personified (to her) in the color red. Unsurprisingly, she does not get along well with Asuka, and when forced to interact with her presses at Asuka's insecurities in an attempt to force her to grow beyond them and out of the 'red' soaked persona she hides inside. Her distaste for the color red also relates to herself as well--the red of her eyes, a symbol of her origin and the roles she is forced to play out.

Altogether Rei is a very isolated and confused girl, slowly becoming bitter about the inherent objectification of her existence but having no idea how to even begin living outside of that. Much like the fish in the experimental restoration aquarium that she visits with her classmates, Rei is a being that is incredible and unique, but unable to live outside of her glass cage due to circumstances outside of her control--and when those limits are removed, she quite literally has no idea what to do with herself.

Abilities:
Much like Kaworu, Rei is the soul of a Seed of Life trapped in a Lilim form; unlike him, she is Lilim-based through and through, save for a few variables. Her body is composed of particle-wave matter (bullshit matter that is technically energy but doesn't have any practical differences from the normal stuff Eva why are you like this), but unlike Kaworu or a typical Angel she does not possess a Core or an S2 Engine. While she is not shown having a need to eat food, she is shown consuming a plethora of medications in place of such--medications that are hinted to be what keeps her body from breaking down due to the (previously) fractured state of her soul. She needs sleep, can become physically exhausted, and can very much be killed by normal means.

What she does possess, however, is a manifestable AT Field...in theory. While Rei 3 (the clone that is created after this Rei dies) is shown to have a functioning AT Field, Rei 2 is never shown to have one, nor does she seem to think she should. This can be explained by Unit 00 and the death of Rei 1 before her--when Rei 1 died, her's/Lilith's soul was recovered and split, part of it placed into Unit 00 and part of it put into Rei 2. Evidence from the series can be provided as proof if needed, but in the interest of not cluttering this up further, suffice to say that when Rei and Unit 00 are absorbed, it is entirely possible that the broken fragments of soul re-fused once again and regained its power and control. If allowed, Rei would not have immediate knowledge of or control over her AT Field, but could learn to use it with time and practice. Obviously it would be subject to the same limitations as Kaworu's, as well.

If you could give up all emotions, both good and bad, would you?
...no. What we feel, and why we feel that way, is what makes a person unique. That is the shape of our soul, what defines us, and to be rid of that is to become something else.

Do you see yourself as more logical or emotional?
Emotional...? How I feel is...it was not important, for what I needed to do. I pilot Eva because of my bond with others, but how I felt... Did I do these things because I wanted to, or because I was told?

Can you forgive a major transgression if the one who did it is sorry?
I...do not know. People can do horrible things from necessity, or because they are driven to them. They can regret because the consequences are painful, rather than the act itself. If I forgive them or do not, will it change anything? What I hate them for can't be undone.

What would you change about the world, if you were able?
...a way to live in peace. A world that can exist together. Is that possible?

Do you prefer spending time with many people, a few friends, or by yourself?
Being alone is...easier. People can be confusing, and are hurt easily. But it is comforting as well, to be among others who are smiling. It is mankind's nature, to crave what can hurt us so badly.

Who is the most important person (or persons) in your life, and why?
...I was saved. Despite the dangers and who I am, he came for me. I feel warm when Ikari is near. When he smiles I am happy. I want...I wanted him to be happy, too.

What would you say is your best quality?
...I do not know. I know what parts of me are valued, what others desire of me. But what is the 'best'...can you take out one part, without destroying it along with the rest?
